Gabe Mythen holds a Chair in Sociology at the University of Liverpool in the UK and is the Regional Director of the ESRC’s North West Doctoral Training Centre. Gabe has established an international reputation for his theoretical work on the nature of (post) risk societies. Following on from his holistic critique of the risk society thesis, his work on developing synergistic social science approaches to risk has been widely acclaimed. Over the last two decades Gabe has been studying the impacts of risk on everyday life across a range of domains, including national security, crime, politics, welfare, work, the environment and consumption. During the course of his career he has explored the many ways in which social dangers are socially constructed and symbolically represented, how risks are perceived by different cultural groups, the ways in which risks are politically managed and the modes of regulation deployed by government and criminal justice agencies seeking to control risks. Gabe has delivered lectures and invited papers in Europe, North America, South America, Asia and Oceania and held visiting roles in a number of prestigious global Universities including the University of Sydney, Paris Sorbonne University, Auckland University and Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich. He is the author/editor of four books on risk and his more recent work on security and counter-terrorism has published widely in a range of high impact factor journals – including the British Journal of Sociology; Security Dialogue; Sociology and the British Journal of Criminology – and he presently sits on the editorial boards of several esteemed international journals.
